Annual Technical Car Inspection Qatar: Fahes Guide and How to Pass First Time
Saaed Mobile Car Repair

Qatar’s annual technical car inspection — known as Fahes (الفحص الفني الدوري) — is a mandatory roadworthiness check required for vehicle registration renewal. Understanding what Fahes checks, why cars fail, and how to prepare your vehicle ensures a first-time pass and avoids the frustration of a second appointment.

What Is the Fahes Inspection?

Fahes is Qatar’s compulsory periodic technical inspection (PTI) system, operated through authorised inspection centres across the country. All registered vehicles in Qatar must pass Fahes annually to renew their registration (Istimara). The inspection is designed to ensure that vehicles on Qatar’s roads meet minimum safety and environmental standards — detecting worn or failed components that could cause accidents or excessive emissions.

What Fahes Inspects

The Fahes inspection covers eight main areas. Lighting — all exterior lights must function correctly: headlights on both low and high beam, indicators front and rear, brake lights, reverse lights, and hazard lights. Any single bulb failure causes a fail. Brakes — the vehicle is tested on a brake roller to measure stopping force and balance between left and right wheels. Worn pads, a seized calliper, or contaminated fluid causing imbalance will fail. Tyres — tread depth measured on all four tyres; the legal minimum in Qatar is 1.6mm, but tyres with visible sidewall cracking, bulging, or damage are also failed regardless of tread depth. Steering — the inspector checks for excessive play in the steering wheel and correct straight-line tracking. Emissions — a basic check for visible exhaust smoke on diesel vehicles and check engine light status on all vehicles; an illuminated check engine light will fail Fahes. Windscreen — no cracks in the driver’s line of vision; window tint above the legal limit on front windows will fail. Horn — must be functional and of appropriate sound level. Wipers — must clear the windscreen effectively. Under-vehicle — obvious leaks and loose components inspected.

Most Common Fahes Failure Reasons in Qatar

Based on experience with Qatar’s vehicle fleet, the most common Fahes failure reasons are: tyre tread below minimum or sidewall cracking from age; single bulb failure often not noticed by the owner; brake imbalance from a partially seized calliper; check engine light from an unresolved fault code; and windscreen tinting above legal limits on vehicles with aftermarket tinting applied.
